The First Lady of Taekwondo

Grandmaster Youngsook Kim, Chairperson

Beloved and celebrated throughout the world, Grandmaster Youngsook Kim is clearly the first lady of Taekwondo.

In her 40 year Taekwondo career, she was the first woman to open her own school, the first woman instructor, the first woman international referee, and now, the first woman to hold an international tournament, exclusively for women.

Now a seventh degree black belt, Kim has spent her life struggling for gender equality in the martial arts. Her dedication and commitment has made it possible for women to excel in a sport once dominated by men.

Yet, there is still a great deal deal to accomplish as she approaches her current challenge of bringing women together for this historic event.

Her accomplishments include:

• Grandmaster of World Taekwondo Academy
• Coach of both the United States and Korean National Women's Taekwondo Teams
• Served at nine embassies in Korea, including United States, Germany, and Switzerland
• Instructor of the combat police unit MAPO in Seoul, Korea
• Created curriculum for the physical fitness departments at Ehwa Women's University and Yonsei University
• Coached at several High Schools
• Awarded "Community Service Award" by the city council of Los Angeles
• Awarded "Community Service Award" by the city of Seoul, Korea
• Awarded "Community Service Award" by the city of Miami, FL, USA
• Awarded "Community Service Award" by the county of Los Angeles, CA, USA
